  • Eastport Landing. The NIMBYS are alive and well and have proclaimed there shall be no development in Eastport. Well, that may not be possible, responsible, or even legal…so rather than ranting and raving, why not listen to the guy who is proposing to renovate and bring something new to an aging strip shopping center in Eastport.
  • Marijuana! We spoke with Caroline Phillips who is a marijuana advocate and the founder of the National Cannabis Festival happening on 4/22. We talk about what is on the horizon for Maryland as we move into uncharted territory. We talk about the ridiculous (and comical) laws in DC surrounding marijuana, and a whole lot more! If you are curious about the changes–this is a must-listen episode!
  • Maryland’s Comptroller, Peter Franchot was with us last week and pulled no punches. He explained what the hell it is he does besides collect the taxes and issue the refunds. We also talked about his efforts to get AC in the Baltimore schools and making schools start after Labor Day statewide!
  • Alex Pline. OK, so you may not know the name unless you are an avid biker; but he is an Annapolitan that sits on the City’s Transportation Board and sheds some insight into what many perceive as madness with the City’s new parking contractor–SP+. We also talk about biking in Maryland and where it needs to go!
  • Mayoral Candidate Mike Pantelides talks about his upcoming re-election campaign. He takes off his Mayor’s hat, loosens his tie and talks about why and how he will win another 4 years in November of 2017.

Congressman Anthony Brown: ACA, the EPA and The Bay, Military Spending, and Martin O’Malley (E-35)

A few weeks ago, Congressman Anthony Brown’s (D- 4th District, MD) office contacted us about having the Congressman on the podcast. Sure thing!  We sat down with Rep. Anthony Brown in his Largo office to discuss a whole bunch of things that were on the freshman Congressman’s mind.

We talked about the Affordable Care Act and what the future looks like under President Trump. We talked about the proposed funding cut to the EPA and in particular the Chesapeake Bay. We talked military spending and how it should not be at the expense of domestic spending. We talked about Martin O’Malley, whom the Congressman said was “the best environmental Governor in the history of Maryland” and the chances for an O’Malley presidential run in 2020. Finally, we let Rep. Brown get a word in edgewise and talk about his focus during his term in office–workforce creation.

Talk to the Congressman:

Eastport Landing: A conversation with the developer of a controversial project in the heart of Annapolis (E-34)

The Eastportaricans are all fired up. Someone has proposed building 127 apartments adjacent and attached to the Eastport Shopping Center and they are up in arms.

The end of the shopping center under consideration is largely vacant and the developers, Solstice Partners, are looking to include (in addition to the 127 apartments) a marketplace, some retail shops, gathering places, a LEED building, landscaping and an improved runoff situation.

The opponents are upset that the traffic will be too much. They are upset at the height of the building. They are upset that there will be 127 more residential units in Eastport. Everyone has a solution.

So, we sat down with Jeff Jacobson and asked him the questions. We listened to his vision. The work that has been done so far, and how they plan to engage the community to make it a true community development. And we asked about other uses for the property. It should be noted that Solstice Partners is an EQUITY partner with the center’s owners. They are not going to build and run. They are part of, and will remain part of the community.

Take a listen and learn. In our opinion, this has the potential to be a fantastic addition to the Eastport community with very little downside.

Cannabis: It’s Legal–Kinda. It’s Coming. And there is a National Cannabis Festival (E-33)

Marijuana is coming! In fact a dispensary is about to pop up on West Street in Annapolis in a few months!  We thought we should talk about it with some experts, so please welcome Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong!

Well, maybe not!  But we do have Caroline Phillips and Kevin Cranford with us today. Both are advocates for the legalization of marijuana and have been VERY vocal on the national scene in lobbying for the decriminalization and legalization for medical and recreational use.

In fact, the 2nd Annual National Cannabis Festival is about to take place at RFK Stadium in Washington on April 22nd and Caroline is the Founder & CEO of it!

We sat down on the rooftop at Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge to talk about the existing laws, the coming laws, misconceptions, right-conceptions, and much more.

If you are looking to go to the National Cannabis Festival, understand it is NOT a “pot fest.” It is an educational and advocacy festival. Yes, they will have music and food and it will be a good time; but expect to see cannabis related vendors, organizations, lawmakers, how to grown, and a special area where Marylanders can meet the growers, cultivators, and dispensers. Get your questions answered and basically learn more than we can cover in an hour here on The Maryland Crabs!  Get your tickets at the link!

A special thanks to our sponsors this week including…Homestead Gardens  and Union Jack’s Annapolis!

Nourishment for this episode comes by way of Metropolitan Kitchen & Lounge on West Street. The rooftop is about to open and the lamb burger is as fine and tasty as it has always been!

Next week–we are talking developers. We sit down with Jeff Jacobson who is hoping to add on to the Eastport Shopping Center in Annapolis and create a more vibrant and livable community. Can he doe it? Tune in and see.
