This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!
Whether with each of the living members of the Grateful Dead, his band Voodoo Dead, with Parliament/Funkadelic co-founder Bernie Worrell or his solo acoustic project, Steve Kimock has proven himself a versatile master of improvisation for over four decades, and in the process inspiring music fans with his transcendent guitar speak voiced through electric, acoustic, lap and pedal steel guitars. While one can say that his genre is rock, no one niche has ever confined him.
In this Crabcake, we talk about his beginnings, playing with his incredibly talented son, and his new album due out in the fall. Oh and we touch on the time when Jerry Garcia said he was his favorite unknown (at the time) guitar player!
Be sure to listen to Steve’s latest single, Sagan, at the end of this Crabcake!
He’s leaving! After more than a quarter-century at the helm of St. John’s College, Christoper Nelson is retiring! With that kind of tenure, we thought it woudl be a great time to invade his office and talk.
We covered all sorts of ground. From what makes St. John’s unique, to how they insulate themselves from the political turmoil found on many campuses, to the changes he has seen in Annapolis and St. John’s over his tenure.
We talked about the struggles the college faced during the recession, and the struggles all colleges are facing in today’s world and what will be needed to thrive going forward.
Chris Nelson has left a mark on the institution and the town and our conversation brings it out. Did you know the Nelson is the longest serving president of ANY college or university in the state? Now you do.
Chris leaves his post (and cushy office) at the end of June and will take a brief sabbatical while he organizes his new home, and then like Schwarzenegger in The Terminator—he’ll be back. Nelson will return as a Tutor (that’s Johnnyese for Professor).

The Baltimore Ravens. We got on the phone and talked about Play Like A Raven (coming up at Annapolis High), wha the team and players are doing out in the community and a look into the 2017 season! Oh, and they gave us some tickets…no not to a game (we tried), but to their Play Like A Raven Clinic–details on how you can win at the end of the podcast
Crystal Spring or Providence Point. You can call it whatever you like; but the developers are pushing forward to bring a continuing care facility to the Forest Drive corridor in Annapolis. There are obstacles to overcome along with an election for Mayor. We talked with Larry Bradshaw, the CEO of National Lutheran Communities & Services who actually IS the developer. Check it out!
Fests. Fests. Fests. Get your party shoes on. This episode we talk about all the festivals that are coming to town. Well, at least three that will be here shortly. The Naptown barBAYq, The Annapolis Irish Fesitval (absolutely), and the 50th Maryland Seafood Festival.
Angel Traynor from Serenity Sistas talks to the crabs about her addiction and recovery. How she went from jailhouse to running a company that provides transitional housing for recovering men and women. Hear about our heroin epidemic from someone on the front lines!
Congressman Anthony Brown sat down with the Crabs last week and talked about the Affordable Care Act under President Trump, the proposed slashing of funding to the Chesapeake Bay, military spending, and a little bit about his time with former Maryland Governor O’Malley and if he is ready to challenge President Trump in 2020.
Eastport Landing. The NIMBYS are alive and well and have proclaimed there shall be no development in Eastport. Well, that may not be possible, responsible, or even legal…so rather than ranting and raving, why not listen to the guy who is proposing to renovate and bring something new to an aging strip shopping center in Eastport.
