Skip Auld…Anne Arundel County Public Library (E-85)

This week, we talk all about the Anne Arundel County Library. WAIT….STOP! We know what you’re thinking, what with your finger hovering over the delete icon and all. But this is NOT your father’s library we’re talking about here, with the big, clunky card catalog and the shushy librarian with her hair in a tight bun. No, it is the next generation of library, and it is spectacular!

John sits down with Skip Auld, the Executive Director of the Anne Arundel County Library, and he brings the Crabs up to speed on all the new features and services that the library offers, including Lynda.com, Kanopy streaming movies, Overdrive for ebooks and audiobooks, Rosetta Stone, Brainfuse, and much, much more. And Skip has news about the new construction and new location at Westfield Annapolis. This is worth the listen, folks!

Talking bullshit with AACC’s Dr. David Tengwall (E-84)

This week, we talk bullshit! Not the normal bullshit but real bullshit. Our guest is Dr. David Tengwall from Anne Arundel Community College and he is offering a course on.. well, bullshit.

In these times, he felt there was a need for students (and adults) to learn how to recognize bullshit in politics, medicine, news, and in life in general.  The course which is brand new started earlier this week and will be offered again in the fall–in time for you to recognize bullshit before the elections!

This was a fun episode, but it comes with a warning. There are some many times when curse words are uttered– and that’s no bullshit!

And THIS is one guest we need to do a drinking podcast with—and we’ll even buy!

CRABCAKES: Annapolis Film Festival | The Shorts Challengers (March 2018)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs!  What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20.  In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

This year, the Annapolis Film Festival has a “Shorts Challenge” which will happen at Maryland Hall on Saturday the 24th at 10am. It is somewhat American Idol-esque in that there are filmmakers who have competed to be on the stage and to be judged by a panel of experts!

The catch–the audience gets to vote too.

Listen to 6 filmmakers pitch their idea for a short film and the best one will be awarded a fantastic production and post-production package and a slot in the 2019 Annapolis Film Festival.

We spoke to three of filmmakers who have made it to the final round. First up–Jessica Jacklin

WOMAN – JESSICA JACKLIN

Jessica is a Maryland native living in Brooklyn with a somewhat autobiographical film about a woman suffering from endometriosis. The film “Woman” takes you through the highs and the lows of reproductive health and allows her to inject her own experiences as well.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her, and also about another short she has that will also be showing at the festival!

Next up, Annalise Lamberty

SUMMER FRUIT – ANNALISE LAMBERTY

Annalise is a transplanted Minneapolean (made that up) living in LA finishing up film school. Her film, “Summer Fruit” is the story of a young couple trying to make ends meet while dealing with a cancer diagnosis and how to save money, they tackled the very intimate act of cutting her hair rather than risking what treatment might do.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her and her upcoming visit to Annapolis.

Next up is Lindsey Corriveau

WHAT HAPPENED TO LILLY – LINDSEY CORRIVEAU

Annalise is a local filmmaker based in Severna Park and knows Annapolis well.  “What Happened to Lilly” is the story of human trafficking and child prostitution in the US which is a tremendous issue. With this film, Lindsey hopes to bring light to the issue without necessarily relying on shock to do it.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her, and also about another short she too, has that will also be showing at the festival!

100 Days With Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley (E-83)

Mayor Gavin Buckley was elected in November 2017 and took office on December 4th. Today marks his 101st day in office and yesterday we sat down with the Mayor for an hour-long conversation to talk about the first one hundred days–how he thinks he is doing…how is is doing..and what is on the horizon.

Citizens wanted change. That was obvious at the polls. They got it with Gavin Buckley. If nothing else, the man is full of ideas, from a “Senior Prom” on the roof of a garage, to a three day music festival, to developing City Dock into a boutique hotel. We talk about capital projects and the looming fiscal issues that he will face.

And…he’s still not giving up on the convention center!

Take a listen and let us know what you think!
