Michael Hughes of MH Media Strategies…Hot Tequila Edition (E-107)

Michael Hughes is not just the marketing genius behind MH Media Strategies here in Annapolis, but he spent most of his life as a radio god with a Forrest Gump-like knack for brushes with music legends. From being served tea by Sir Paul McCartney to watching Stevie Ray Vaughn air-guitar in his living room to being flown to Germany by Roger Waters to watch the epic 1991 concert at the Berlin Wall, Michael has been sitting on a treasure trove of stories that he’s always been a bit reluctant to tell. That is, until Tim showed up at his office in Eastport one afternoon to coax those stories out, armed only with a bottle of hot tequila that had been sitting in his car all day during a heat wave. John took the day off to go to his anger management class, so there were no adults in the room to supervise this episode.

CRABCAKE: What’s new at the 51st Annual Seafood Festival? | (August 2018)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Well, how appropriate to have a crabcake for a seafood festival? As summer gives way to fall, we can always count on the Maryland Seafood Festival to be the harbinger. Today, we talk with Brendan Curley who has been putting the festival on for more than a decade.  We talk about some history, but more importantly, what we can expect on September 8th and 9th and what is new and exciting!

Never been? Yo HAVE to go.  If you are a regular, we’ll see you there. And for both — save 25% on your tickets using the code EYE2018 when you check out.  Here is your link!

The HPV controversy. Are MD schools pushing it? And is it safe? Questions abound (E-106)

It’s controversial. The HPV vaccine. Some say it will prevent cancer. Others are not so sure. One woman in Sparks, Maryland knows that it killed her daughter.

Annapolis resident, Josh Mazer has been critical of the way this vaccine has been marketed to children. After all, it IS a sexually transmitted disease.  Mazer uncovered a letter sent to all the school superintendents in the state encouraging them to push the vaccine and suggesting that it should be included with typical pre-school vaccinations. He also dug up $90 million that the State received to market the drug.

The State is beginning to listen, but Mazer feels they have a long way to go.

The genesis of this episode was an opinion piece in The Capital. It piqued our interest and we sat down with Josh with an open mind and learned a lot. And for those who will immediately jump on the “he’s a wacko, nut-job, anti-vaxxer” bandwagon–he’s not. And we address that!

Listen, learn, question. We did. You owe it to yourself and your kids to do the same!

Lifeline 100…Nothing to do with lifesaving. All to do with fun! (E-105)

It sounds a bit like a device you might see advertised on late night television– Lifeline 100.  Might even be a new hospital reality show. But it is anything but that.

Now in it’s fifth year, Lifeline 100 is the brainchild of Bike AAA and Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department. It is a 100 mile bike ride that covers all corners of the county. But for those (me) not even close to being in shape to ride 100 miles, there are shorter routes–60 miles, 30 miles, 15 miles, and for the kids a bike rodeo! It is a fundraiser for several non-profits and many local businesses get in on the game.

This week we speak with Colleen Joseph from the Recreation and Parks Department and get the scoop.  Won’t you join me on Sunday, October 7th for Lifeline 100?

Full Fledged Fest at Quiet Waters Park! Twist and Stout (E-104)

It’s never happened before! Anne Arundel County is sponsoring a full-on festival at Quiet Waters Park complete with bands, artists, food trucks, vendors, and… wait for it… Maryland Wines and Maryland Craft Beer!  It’s Twist and Stout!

What’s so unusual is that large events with alcohol are usually prohibited. And to make it more unusual, most festivals never have access to the beauty that is Quiet Waters Park.  Join us as we talk with Colleen Joseph from the County about the genesis, the planning, and what to expect on September 29th as the Inaugural Twist and Stout Festival kicks off in Annapolis.

Bonus content: It’s a mystery as we discover that we must have pissed off Scott MacMullan from The Annapolis Podcast!
