Need a Little Work? We Talk to Dr. Barlow from Chesapeake Plastic Surgery (E-124)

We’ve all seen the ads in What’s Up magazine for plastic surgery, Botox, varicose vein removal, teeth whitening and all that.

We wanted to see what the commotion was all about and talk to Dr. Haven Barlow, MD, FACS who is a local renowned plastic surgeon and Mary Ann Treger who is a journalist who has not only written extensively on the subject, but has also had a procedure.

Have a listen and and learn a lot. I did!

CRABCAKE: Porters & Stouts Oh My! Plus A Miracle on Annapolis Street! (December 2018)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or longer in this case, because..well…beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer.  We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis–Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us.  Now, full disclosure–I like beer! I like beer a lot!  But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine.

This month, Lauren Hamilton joined us again and brought along Charlie Oxendine from Katcef and we’re talking Military Bowl and beer.

There is a lot of pomp and circumstance along with the Military Bowl–a few more times to nominate a hero in the Who’s Your Hero contest. A Miracle on Annapolis Street. A parade with the Clydesdales. A tailgate. A bowl game. And New Years!  And in between all that we try out some great winter beers– Devil’s Backbone Danzig, Dominion’s Morning Glory, and Victory’s Storm King.  (My vote is the Danzig) And they created this crazy concoction called a Sofierita!

Have a listen!

Got Plate Envy? The Chesapeake Bay Trust has a New License Plate (E-123)

Slowly you are beginning to see the newest Chesapeake Bay license plate in Maryland. Since 2003, we’ve seen the familiar plate with Claudia the crab and Wade the Blue Heron designed by Annapolis designer Joe Barsin.

Now there’s a new plate in town designed by Tina Cardosi and TM Design from Frederick.

After getting our own plates, we spoke with Tina about the process and how they came up with the idea, and how it made it’s way to my rear bumper. And then, we spoke with Dr. Jana Davis from the Chesapeake Bay Trust to learn about the other side–how much it means to the Trust, what it actually pays for, why a new design was wanted, and what lies ahead!

Have a listen and then get in touch with the MVA and get your plate!

CRABCAKE: Soren Baker..Author of “The History of Gangster Rap” (December 2018)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or however long Tim wants to avoid his family.

The History of Gangster Rap is a deep dive by Gambrills native and Hip-Hop journalist, Soren Baker, into one of the most fascinating subgenres of any music category to date. Sixteen detailed chapters, organized chronologically, examine the evolution of gangster rap, its main players, and the culture that created this revolutionary music. From still-swirling conspiracy theories about the murders of Biggie and Tupac to the release of the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, the era of gangster rap is one that fascinates music junkies and remains at the forefront of pop culture. Filled with interviews with key players such as Snoop Dogg, Ice-T, and dozens more, as well as sidebars, breakout bios of notorious characters, lists, charts, and more, The History of Gangster Rap is the be-all-end-all book that contextualizes the importance of gangster rap as a cultural phenomenon.

5 Minutes…20 Slides… Do You Have What It Takes For Ignite Annapolis 4? (E-122)

Ignite Annapolis is here. Well, not quite yet, but it is coming up on Thursday, March 14th. Go mark your calendars now!

Ignite is a community building program that puts 16 people on the hot spot for 5 minutes. They develop a topic for which they have some passion–from silly to mundane to highly technical to comedic to … well you get the picture. Virtually anything. They develop 20 slides to illustrate their topic. And then Ignite gives them 5 minutes to explain it all and the slides are pre timed. The event will leave you scratching your head. Crying. Laughing. Thinking. But most importantly, it will leave you talking. Talking with your neighbors and some of the 600 people that shared the experience.

This week, we sat down with Liz Thibodeau and Kathleen Booth who are two of the organizers for Ignite 4. We talk about the concept, its growth, the way it builds community and how to become involved as an attendee, speaker, or sponsor!

If you need a break (and don’t we all), this is a perfect way to press a reset button on the winter-doldrums.  Have a listen!
