CRABCAKES: Annapolis Film Festival | The Shorts Challengers (March 2018)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs!  What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20.  In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

This year, the Annapolis Film Festival has a “Shorts Challenge” which will happen at Maryland Hall on Saturday the 24th at 10am. It is somewhat American Idol-esque in that there are filmmakers who have competed to be on the stage and to be judged by a panel of experts!

The catch–the audience gets to vote too.

Listen to 6 filmmakers pitch their idea for a short film and the best one will be awarded a fantastic production and post-production package and a slot in the 2019 Annapolis Film Festival.

We spoke to three of filmmakers who have made it to the final round. First up–Jessica Jacklin

WOMAN – JESSICA JACKLIN

Jessica is a Maryland native living in Brooklyn with a somewhat autobiographical film about a woman suffering from endometriosis. The film “Woman” takes you through the highs and the lows of reproductive health and allows her to inject her own experiences as well.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her, and also about another short she has that will also be showing at the festival!

Next up, Annalise Lamberty

SUMMER FRUIT – ANNALISE LAMBERTY

Annalise is a transplanted Minneapolean (made that up) living in LA finishing up film school. Her film, “Summer Fruit” is the story of a young couple trying to make ends meet while dealing with a cancer diagnosis and how to save money, they tackled the very intimate act of cutting her hair rather than risking what treatment might do.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her and her upcoming visit to Annapolis.

Next up is Lindsey Corriveau

WHAT HAPPENED TO LILLY – LINDSEY CORRIVEAU

Annalise is a local filmmaker based in Severna Park and knows Annapolis well.  “What Happened to Lilly” is the story of human trafficking and child prostitution in the US which is a tremendous issue. With this film, Lindsey hopes to bring light to the issue without necessarily relying on shock to do it.

In addition, we talk about what winning will mean to her, and also about another short she too, has that will also be showing at the festival!

STUMPED

When filmmaker Will Lautzenheiser’s limbs are amputated due to a bacterial infection, his life is derailed and he turns to stand-up comedy (or sit-down comedy) as therapy. He learns to adapt through the power of his spirit, sense of humor, and his guardian “Angel.” Will becomes a candidate for an experimental limb transplant and undergoes the surgery for a double-arm transplant in the hope of regaining his independence–and once again being able to hug his family and friends!

In this Crabcake, we speak with director, Robin Berghaus from her office in Austin, TX. This is Berghaus’s first feature film and we discuss the plotline and the story surrounding Will and her empathy to tell the story.  We talk about Robin’s background and what it was like working with Will to bring his story to life. We also chat a bit about the resistance she felt being a female director in a male dominated world. SPOILER: None!

Yet another fascinating film for me and I have marked it on my list of must see movies.

BUTTERFLY KISSES

Found footage and urban legend come together in chilling fashion to spin this unsettling tale shot on location in Ellicott City, Maryland. When film students decide to capture the “Peeping Tom” ghost on camera, it creates devastating consequences in their lives as they try to prove the ghost is real and not just a special effect they made up. Blurring the line of reality and fiction, this supernatural thriller includes cameos by Eduardo Sánchez, director of The Blair Witch Project, and Matt Lake, author of Weird Maryland: Guide to Maryland’s Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets.

In this Crabcake, we speak with writer, director, and producer Erik Kristopher Myers about his second feature film, Butterfly Kisses. Erik is local to Maryland the setting is right here in Ellicott City as he tackles an urban legend from a different angle. We talk about his interest in filmmaking, his preference in spices for crabs, and why we never got a chance to see this film last year!

This is an intriguing movie for me and I have checked it off on my list of must see movies.

The flu has been brutal this season. And it is not over yet. In this crabcake, we talk to Dr. Mike Freedman from Evolve Medical Clinics on what the hell is going on. Who is affected (hint: there is a new age group and you are probably in it), how to deal with it, and how it is evolving and becoming more resistant every year. And we even touch on the topic of the overdue epidemic and the preparedness of the medical community.
