The 2017 Annapolis Film Festival; Talk Movie To Me! (E-23)

It happens every year…well at least for the past five years! The Annapolis Film Festival is bringing more than 70 films to Annapolis March 30th to April 2nd and we sat down with the founders of this festival that has injected more than $2 million into our economy.

Patti White and Lee Anderson are two of the busiest women in town. They operate FILMSTERS,  full fledged production company from their West Annapolis office, the wildly successful summer camp, and in their spare time…the Annapolis Film Festival which is expected to draw nearly 10,000 to Annapolis over a 4 day period.

We talk about their business, their start in the industry, and just how the ides for the festival was born.  And then we get into the nitty gritty of this year’s fest.  Sit back, and enjoy while we talk movie to Lee Anderson and Patti White!

Thanks this week to:  Anne Arundel Medical Center!

But if you are just joining us…. make sure you check out some (or all) of our previous episodes? You really should. They could change your life. Granted, your life would have to be pretty bad. But still, we have some gems you will want to check out!  Most recently….

  • State Senator John Astle has been a fixture in Annapolis for decades. Now he wants to be Mayor of the City on the Bay. In his first public interview, Astle pulls no punches where he feels mayor Pantelides is falling down, and how he will make a difference.
  • She dances along Ritchie Highway and has a fascination with Madonna, Ke$ha, Brittney Spears, and Paula Abdul. Dale Crites, AKA Brittney Girl Dale, Madonna Girl Dale, Paula Girl Dale, and Ke$ha Girl Dale spills it all. From the sexual abuse suffered as young boy to the suicide of a close friend to his close relationship with the police and how he deals with people that are just plain intolerant.
  • Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams and had a great conversation about crime in Anne Arundel County, the heroin epidemic, the success of his Drug Court, and the case that made him most proud.  We may have touched on that old Winnebago he used for the campaign too!

John Astle: Pilot and Senator! And Maybe Annapolis’ Next Mayor? (E-22)

Maryland State Senator John Astle has been serving in the State legislature for 35 years. This year may be his last as he has decided to run for Mayor of Annapolis. Does he have what it takes?

Senator Astle sits down with the Crabs and talks about the Red Coach Inn where he met his wife, his time in Viet Nam, the untimely death of his son, his time flying President Nixon, his proudest legislation, and of course the upcoming Mayoral election.

Hear the Senator call out the current Mayor, Mike Pantelides, for never speaking to the council. Listen as he tells us who will NOT get his Senate seat if he wins the election; and who to watch in the future.

And here’s a spoiler–he sees nothing on the horizon to stop Governor Hogan from a second term!

Thanks this week to: Homestead Gardens, Union Jacks, and Anne Arundel Medical Center!

What Makes Madonna Girl Dale Tick; A Look Inside One of Brooklyn Park’s Most Famous Residents (E-21)

WARNING: Some Explicit Content & Language
Dale Crites is someone you may not know. Or maybe you just don’t recognize the name.  Dale, a gay male, is also known as (at various times) Madonna Girl Dale, Brittney Girl Dale, or Ke$ha Girl Dale and she can typically be found along Ritchie Highway in Brooklyn Park and Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Where did she come from? What makes her tick? She stops dancing long enough to sit down with the Maryland Crabs to open up during a surprisingly poignant discussion. From sexual abuse as a child, to the death of a close friend, to her relationship with the police, and why performing in the streets of Anne Arundel County is what she does.

This frank, unvarnished and (at times) decidedly R-Rated conversation will open your eyes to someone who is struggling with some deep seated issues and just trying to get along in life.

You can read more about Madonna Girl Dale in a photo essay done by The Baltimore Sun in 2013.

To keep up with Madonna Girl Dale, follow her on Twitter at @MDNAPaula4Ever or on Facebook at Madonna Girl Dale!

The Crabs don’t judge. We hope you don’t either. Just take a listen.

And….a HUGE thank you to Nicole and the gang at Chesapeake Arts Center in Brooklyn Park for allowing us to use a spare room.  If you have not been to CAC...you definitely should!

Thank you to everyone who wrote with suggestions for upcoming episodes. We are on it.  Coming up next week will be a conversation with the latest candidate to throw their hat into the ring for Annapolis Mayor– State Senator John Astle. And down the line, the founders of The Annapolis Film Festival, Mayor Pantelides, Dr. Jana Davis from the Chesapeake Bay Trust and a few more surprises. You will want to stay tuned every Thursday.

  • Last week we crabbed with Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams and had a great conversation about crime in Anne Arundel County, the heroin epidemic, the success of his Drug Court, and the case that made him most proud.  We may have touched on that old Winnebago he used for the campaign too!
  • Marc Rodriguez. You may not know who he is right now, but you will. A sharp guy who has been working with Alderman Littmann and is poised to make a run for office in the upcoming Annapolis elections.
  • Governor Larry Hogan invited us into his private office for Jaegerbombs and wings while we watched the Ravens.  OK, so maybe it was more of a conversation with the State Police watching over us making sure we did not swipe the guitar off his office wall…but we did have a great conversation.

Crime, Heroin, and Justice in Maryland? State’s Attorney Wes Adams Weighs In (E-20)

This week, The Maryland Crabs visit the courthouse to speak with State’s Attorney (for Anne Arundel County), Wes Adams. We remain un-indicted.

In this episode, we delve into the heroin problem that is impacting the state and what is being done to combat it. We talk a bit about the judicial system and how Anne Arundel is getting tougher on crime. Find out about Adams’ personal “YESS!” moment and the one that got away.

For a fantastic insight into crime, heroin, and justice in Maryland, this is a not-to-miss episode of The Maryland Crabs.

Thank you to everyone who wrote with suggestions for upcoming episodes. We are on it.  Coming up in the next few weeks will be the founders of The Annapolis Film Festival, Mayor Pantelides–both the candidate and the Mayor, Brooklyn Park’s very own Britney Girl Dale, and a surprise candidate for Mayor of Annapolis that will shake the race to its core. You will hear it here first!

Big geeky news…. we are now on iHeartRADIO!  So if you listen to iHeartRADIO, you can listen, rate, share, subscribe, favorite right there.  Their app and website search is a bit wonky at the moment but they promised us they’d fix it soon.  But here’s the direct link!

We talked about how we decided to do The Maryland Crabs, where we want to go in 2017 and beyond, some of our past guests, and how good the lunch really was at Sammy’s Italian Pizza Kitchen in Eastport!
  • Governor Larry Hogan invited us into his private office for Jaegerbombs and wings while we watched the Ravens.  OK, so maybe it was more of a conversation with the State Police watching over us making sure we did not swipe the guitar off his office wall…but we did have a great conversation.

Tim restrained himself this week—nothing was stolen from the Courthouse! However, he did pick up a few drinking tips for must-visit pubs the next time he is in Ireland! Who knew the Courthouse was such a wealth of information!

Will Annapolis Finally Have an Hispanic Voice? Marc Rodriguez Thinks So! (E-19)

The City of Annapolis has an election coming up.  Yes, it is an “off” year election cycle and there are changes afoot. This week, Tim and John sit down with Marc Rodriguez and talk about his yet-to-be-officially-announced candidacy for Alderman for Ward 5 in the City. Rodriguez discusses his roots in Mexico City and Hillsmere (yes you read that right), what he has been doing for Alderman Littmann who will not be seeking another term, and what he brings to the Council chamber for the Latino community and the larger Annapolis community.

Thank you to everyone who wrote with suggestions for upcoming episodes. We are on it. Coming up in the next few weeks will be Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams and a candidate for Mayor of Annapolis that will shake that race to its core. You will hear it here first!

A peek into next week….Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams….after that whole Hogan thing, he only agreed to speak with us if we agreed to be searched on the way out of the Courthouse….apparently the Governor wants the stapler back that Tim took.
