Not Guilty (E-127)

We can all agree that getting arrested and charged with attempted murder is a bummer. I think we can also agree that being found not guilty is a good thing when you are innocent. But now what?

In the world of Google, innocence means nothing. Google never forgets.

Today, we speak with an Annapolis native* that is living that nightmare. Spent time working with youth in public housing. Attended St. Mary’s High School. Was a nationally ranked football player. Arrested, charged, and found not guilty. And now, because of Google, he made a conscious decision to NOT name his first born son after himself.

* We are purposely NOT publishing his name to prevent further Google hits!

Last week, we spoke with DaJuan Gay who was recently stopped by the Annapolis City Police. He felt threatened and called his attorney who also felt it was a case of driving while black.

This week, we speak to Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker about the stop. We find out what happened and how it could have been handled better. And we also talk about traffic policing today. So if you are not sure what to do when the red and blue lights light up your rear-view mirror, this is the episode for you!

A Simple Traffic Stop? Or Driving While Black? Two Weeks…Both Sides (E-74)

Earlier this year, former candidate for Alderman and community activist DaJuan Gay was stopped by the Annapolis City Police for running a stop sign. After a simple stop became an extended stop, Gay claims he became concerned and called an attorney. Is this a routine traffic stop? Or a case of DWB–Driving While Black? Here’s DaJuan’s side of the story. And next week, we will speak to the Annapolis City Police Department.

A New Sheriff in Town. A Conversation With New Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker (E-48)

Newly minted Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker sat down with us to talk about the future direction of the department. After a nationwide search, the Mayor decided the best choice was a cop right in the department (he was the #2 under former Chief Pristoop) and one that had the respect of the rank and file officers.

We discussed his vision and the differences between him and the older regime, the 30 plus outreach programs the Annapolis Police Department currently has, the relationship between the department and the council/mayor and the major issues facing him as Chief–opioids, gangs, and establishing a trust with the citizens of Annapolis.

What we did NOT talk about (because this news broke the day after we recorded) was the recent allegations surrounding a lawsuit that is to be filed alleging that an officer (who has since resigned) stole $1500 from a citizen during an incident. Nor did we discuss the latest incident involving “inappropriate contact” between an officer and a citizen involved in an incident.

Coming up….a talk with the organizers behind the Travis Manion Foundation 911 Heroes Run, former County Executive John R. Leopold, the Chairman of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and crabcakes with the Aldermanic candidates for the City of Annapolis.

Looking ahead–A series of Crabcakes with the candidates for Alderperson for the City of Annapolis, a conversation with the Travis Manion Foundation, Congressman John Sarbanes, an exclusive talk with Annapolis’ new police chief–Chief Scott Baker! And more!

This is a special edition of The Maryland Crabs.  Yesterday, Annapolis Mayor Michael Pantelides fired long-time Chief of Police, Michael Pristoop.

In his first interview, Mayor Pantelides sits down with the Crabs to talk about that elephant in the room–the firing of long-time Police Chief Michael Pristoop.

We talk about the need for the firing and the Mayor’s vision for a replacement–who he thinks will be in place in the next 75 days! We re-visit his term in office and discuss his successes and a failures and how he sees the next 9 months of his first term playing out. 110 Compromise…Crystal Spring…HACA…crime, and much more.

This is a candid, special edition, conversation you will not want to miss!

Thanks this week to: Middleton Tavern for the wonderful hospitality as well as Union Jacks, Zachary’s Jewelers, and Anne Arundel Medical Center!

But if you are just joining us…. make sure you check out some (or all) of our previous episodes? You really should. They could change your life. Granted, your life would have to be pretty bad. But still, we have some gems you will want to check out!  Most recently….

  • The Annapolis Film Festival was our guest last week. Give it a listen and see how this huge event morphed from an idea into a multi-day event drawing thousands to our little sleepy town by the Bay.
  • State Senator John Astle has been a fixture in Annapolis for decades. Now he wants to be Mayor of the City on the Bay. In his first public interview, Astle pulls no punches where he feels mayor Pantelides is falling down, and how he will make a difference.
  • She dances along Ritchie Highway and has a fascination with Madonna, Ke$ha, Brittney Spears, and Paula Abdul. Dale Crites, AKA Brittney Girl Dale, Madonna Girl Dale, Paula Girl Dale, and Ke$ha Girl Dale spills it all. From the sexual abuse suffered as young boy to the suicide of a close friend to his close relationship with the police and how he deals with people that are just plain intolerant.

Oh hell…just go back and listen to the ones you haven’t heard!  And PLEASE be sure to tell your friends about us!
