Who’s your hero? And a conversation with a real one from Folds of Honor (November 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or longer in this case, because..well…beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer.  We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis–Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us.  Now, full disclosure–I like beer! I like beer a lot!  But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine.

This month is not so much about beer. Well, OK Budweiser Black Lager, but… it is all about heroes. Once again, Katcef Brothers and the Military Bowl have teamed up and want to know who your hero is so you can have a shot at a VIP experience at the Military Bowl. See below for dates and locations!

But we also talk to a real hero today. Rocky Sickmann was a Marine who spent 444 days in captivity in Tehran in the Iranian Hostage Crisis back in 1979.  Today, he is retired from a civilian life with Budweiser and spearheads the company’s relationship to  Folds of Honor which provides scholarships to to the millions of military dependents affected by war.As Rocky says– Freedom is not free.

Rocky will be at the Navy SMU game this Saturday where he along with Katcef Brothers will present a check to Folds of Honor!

Please have a listen!

Security Expert Todd Rosenthal (E-150)

Do we live in dangerous times or are we just being scared by a constant stream of stories and images by a ubiquitous mass media, bent on ratings? Either way, you don’t want to take any chances. You need to be aware of your surroundings at all times and be ready to defend yourself.

John and Tim sit down with Todd Rosenthal, a security expert currently working as security director for a multinational government contractor, who has been trained in all aspects of personal security. We talk about what you can do to keep you and your family safe at home, at work, and while out and about. Do you think you know what to do in a crisis? You’d better.

What does a new City Dock look like? We talk with the people that are shaping it. (E-149)

City Dock in Annapolis has been studied to death. About the only thing that everyone can agree upon is that a parking lot is not the best use.

Last year, after a political firestorm placed City Dock on an endangered watchlist by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the parties came together. The City of Annapolis, the non-profit Historic Annapolis, and all of the various constituents (92 of them) have been working for nearly a year to re-imagine the area and are about to release that plan for adoption and implementation.

This plan has a great chance of working for a number of reasons. Have a listen as we talk about it with Eileen Fogarty and Bill Kardash who are the co-chairs of the City Dock Action Committee!

100 Thing to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die (E-148)

We all have bucket lists. Tim wants to find proper New York pizza in Maryland. John would love to find a podcasting partner who isn’t allergic to work. We can all dream. But “100 Things to Do in Annapolis and the Eastern Shore Before You Die” by Susan Moynihan is the ultimate Maryland bucket list!

Susan moved to Annapolis when she was 13, and her best coming-of-age memories are here. She moved to NYC after college, but Annapolis was always home, albeit for shorter bits of time: Christmas break, two weeks in summer, spring or fall weekends as work and life allowed.

In 2018 she moved back to Annapolis, and found her hometown familiar, but different. She wanted to get to know it on a deeper level, so she went to her go-to: writing. She spent six months researching this book, driving all over Annapolis and the Eastern Shore, talking to old friends and making new ones, revisiting longtime favorites and searching out surprises.
