CRABCAKE: Annapolis Compost….Turning Trash into Treasure (August 2017)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs!  What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, Tim sits down with fellow gardening nerds, Anna Kramer and Karl Schrass, the owners and proprietors of Annapolis Compost. Before moving to Maryland in 2015, Anna and Karl spent four years in Germany, where separating food waste is a part of daily life. In Annapolis, however, they faced a lack of options and struggled to find a way to recycle their scraps. It was that search that sprouted the idea for Annapolis Compost.

This week, Jimmy DeButts, the Associate Editor of The Capital Gazette sits down with us to talk about the incredibly prescient editorial he penned the weekend before the Annapolis City Council once again proved that they have no idea what to do with the Market House.  Frustrated with the process…listen along as we bitch!

This week we speak with Natanya Levioff who is the local Race Director for the 911 Heroes Run on September 17th at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. She is also a long-time volunteer with the Travis Manion Foundation.

Natanya gives us the history of Travis Manion, his friend Brendan Looney and how they came to be buried side by side in Arlington. We talk about the growth of the foundation and all that it does for our veterans and active duty service members. And we even discuss fire departments. From Travis’ visit to Rescue 1 of the FDNY and our own Annapolis Volunteer Fire Department and their memorial garden.  If not me…then who?

A New Sheriff in Town. A Conversation With New Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker (E-48)

Newly minted Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker sat down with us to talk about the future direction of the department. After a nationwide search, the Mayor decided the best choice was a cop right in the department (he was the #2 under former Chief Pristoop) and one that had the respect of the rank and file officers.

We discussed his vision and the differences between him and the older regime, the 30 plus outreach programs the Annapolis Police Department currently has, the relationship between the department and the council/mayor and the major issues facing him as Chief–opioids, gangs, and establishing a trust with the citizens of Annapolis.

What we did NOT talk about (because this news broke the day after we recorded) was the recent allegations surrounding a lawsuit that is to be filed alleging that an officer (who has since resigned) stole $1500 from a citizen during an incident. Nor did we discuss the latest incident involving “inappropriate contact” between an officer and a citizen involved in an incident.

Coming up….a talk with the organizers behind the Travis Manion Foundation 911 Heroes Run, former County Executive John R. Leopold, the Chairman of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and crabcakes with the Aldermanic candidates for the City of Annapolis.
