CRABCAKE: Lifeline 100…A 100, 60, 30, or 15 mile bike ride for charity! (September 2019)

It sounds a bit like a device you might see advertised on late night television– Lifeline 100.  Might even be a new hospital reality show. But it is anything but that.

Now in its sixth year, Lifeline 100 is the brainchild of Bike AAA and Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks Department. It is a 100 mile bike ride that covers all corners of the county. But for those (me) not even close to being in shape to ride 100 miles, there are shorter routes–60 miles, 30 miles, 15 miles, and for the kids a bike rodeo! It is a fundraiser for several non-profits and many local businesses get in on the game. It all get started at Kinder Farm Park on Sunday, October 6th!

We talked with Colleen Joseph from the Recreation and Parks Department and get the scoop.

Looking to ride with a group?  Join ours!  Send me an email message at info@themarylandcrabs.com.  We’re doing the ALL TRAIL 30 mile ride and likely the additional 10 mile BWI trail for a total of 40. Start about 8am, guaranteed to be having beers by 1pm. Join us on Sunday, October 67th for Lifeline 100?

Our New Annapolis Police Chief, Edward Jackson (E-145)

The new Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson might be new in town, but he is a seasoned veteran when it comes to law enforcement, as he spent twenty years in the Baltimore Police Department, working his way up from a officer walking the beat to colonel. Chief Jackson marks a change in tack by Mayor Gavin Buckley who wanted a chief who could connect with the community and identify the subtleties of policing a town as diverse and unique as Annapolis.

John and Tim sat down with Chief Jackson to talk about where he came from and what he sees as his role as Annapolis’ top cop. How will his strategy be different from his predecessors? What does community policing look like under his leadership? Why would he agree to sit down with us, considering The Curse of the Maryland Crabs in regards to police chiefs? Can Tim hold his gun? We answer all of these questions and more!

CRABCAKE: Fall beer, Fall fests, and the Clydesdales! (September 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or longer in this case, because..well…beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer.  We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis–Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us.  Now, full disclosure–I like beer! I like beer a lot!  But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine.

This month, the team at Katcef is only giving up a taste of the fall beers–they will come out in force next month. But we do try Devil’s Backbone O’Fest and Victory’s Fest Bier.We broke some news about the Clydesdales and this year’s Military Bowl, but we also talked about a bunch of festivals you need to put on your calendar to really experience the fall beer scene!  And in chronological order….

* Friday, September 13 at Buffalo Wild Wings. 5pm to 7pm. The Bud Light Brigade will be there with swag, giveaways, and your chance to win FOUR tickets to see Navy Football take on ECU on Saturday! And, it includes parking.  Bud Light will be around town every Friday before a Navy home game looking to give away the Bud Light Golden Tickets! Keep your eyes peeled for them!

Come along on our beer journey!

CRABCAKE: Let’s talk about suicide for a minute (September 2019)

OK, right up front, this is not an upbeat crabcake. Not by a long shot! But it is a conversation we need to have. Suicide rates are on the increase at alarming rates and treating the mental issues that cause suicide need to be enhanced.

This week is National Suicide Prevention Week.

We sat down with Kat Olbrich who is the Area Director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Dean D’Camera, a local businessman whose brother committed died by suicide fourteen years ago.  We talk about the problem, what is currently being done, and what still remains.  We learn what YOU can do when you suspect someone may be in trouble.

And we learn how you can help. The easiest way it to come out to the Annual Out of the Darkness Walk on September 21st at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. If you can, form a team and raise some much needed funds. If you can’t, please come out and support and walk with 2000 others that have been impacted by suicide. As Dean says in the podcast, Kevin Bacon has six degrees of separation–suicide has one!

CRABCAKE: Yeah baby, Twist and Stout is back for the 2nd year at Quiet Waters Park! (September 2019)

It’s happening again! Anne Arundel County Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a full-on festival at Quiet Waters Park complete with bands, artists, food trucks, vendors, and… wait for it… Maryland Wines and Maryland Craft Beer!  It’s Twist and Stout!

What’s so unusual is that large events with alcohol are usually prohibited. And to make it more unusual, most festivals never have access to the beauty that is Quiet Waters Park.  Join us as we talk with Colleen Joseph from the County about the festival, what they learned last year, and what’s in store for this year!

Save the date– Saturday, September 28, 2019 from Noon to 6pm at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis — Twist and Stout!

Have a listen!
