The Baltimore Ravens; Play Like A Raven, Ravens Foundation, and a look into 2017 (E-39)

The Baltimore Ravens one of Maryland’s two favorite NFL teams. And the season does not end in February (hopefully) but continues year round.

This week, we talk to three key (off the field) people about what The Ravens are doing off-season and what the 2017 team looks like.

Play Like A Raven. Adam Rudel talks about the fun outreach of The Ravens and their caravan. The Play Like A Raven Clinic is an on field clinic for kids 5-15 and will feature pro coaching, retired players and more. The clinics will be coming to Annapolis High, on June 12th, Urbana High on June 13th, Meadowood Regional Park on June 14th, and Queen Anne’;s County High on June 15th!  But if you are not on the field, there will be plenty of free stuff to do–cheerleaders, players for autographs, Poe, inflatables, and much more. Check it all out here!  AND….we have 5 tickets to the clinics to give away!  Just be one of the first 5 to email us at info@themarylandcrabs.com

Ravens Foundation. Heather Darney is the Executive Director of the Ravens Foundation and the Director of Community Relations for the team. All too often we hear the bad news surrounding the NFL and the players. What you don’t hear is the great stuff the Ravens Foundation and the players are doing on their own. From a bookmobile to providing meals to needy families in their home states to helping to quell a riot in Baltimore. Heather clues us in!

A peek into the 2017 team. Finally Garrett Downing, who hosts the Ravens Daily podcast during the season and is their Social Media Manager chats with us about the prospects for 2017, the draft, and what surprises Ozzie Newsome might have up his sleeve.

  • Crystal Spring or Providence Point. You can call it whatever you like; but the developers are pushing forward to bring a continuing care facility to the Forest Drive corridor in Annapolis. There are obstacles to overcome along with an election for Mayor. We talked with Larry Bradshaw, the CEO of National Lutheran Communities & Services who actually IS the developer. Check it out!
  • Fests. Fests. Fests. Get your party shoes on.  This episode we talk about all the festivals that are coming to town. Well, at least three that will be here shortly. The Naptown barBAYq, The Annapolis Irish Fesitval (absolutely), and the 50th Maryland Seafood Festival.
  • Angel Traynor from Serenity Sistas talks to the crabs about her addiction and recovery. How she went from jailhouse to running a company that provides transitional housing for recovering men and women. Hear about our heroin epidemic from someone on the front lines!
  • Congressman Anthony Brown sat down with the Crabs last week and talked about the Affordable Care Act under President Trump, the proposed slashing of funding to the Chesapeake Bay, military spending, and a little bit about his time with former Maryland Governor O’Malley and if he is ready to challenge President Trump in 2020.
  • Eastport Landing. The NIMBYS are alive and well and have proclaimed there shall be no development in Eastport. Well, that may not be possible, responsible, or even legal…so rather than ranting and raving, why not listen to the guy who is proposing to renovate and bring something new to an aging strip shopping center in Eastport.
  • Marijuana! We spoke with Caroline Phillips who is a marijuana advocate and the founder of the National Cannabis Festival happening on 4/22. We talk about what is on the horizon for Maryland as we move into uncharted territory. We talk about the ridiculous (and comical) laws in DC surrounding marijuana, and a whole lot more! Crystal Spring or Village at Providence Point; we talk to the developer for the latest (E-38)

Roadtrip!  The Maryland Crabs took to the highways this week and headed to Rockville and the National Lutheran Communities & Services (NLCS) HQ to speak with Larry Bradshaw, their CEO.

NLCS is the developer behind the proposed continuing care community called The Village at Providence Point…or for you old-timers….Crystal Spring.

The original plan has been scaled way back and now features strictly an age restricted continuing care community to serve the needs of the senior population in the area. But it comes with some questions.

And we ask them. What about the size? What about the preservation of the existing forest? What about the traffic? Schools?

Listen in as the head honcho gives us the scoop on where they are and where they are headed in Annapolis.

Thank you to everyone who wrote with suggestions for upcoming episodes. We are on it.

It’s Spring and time for festivals; here are three of the best– BarBayQ, Irish, and Seafood (E-37)

It happens every year. Winter goes away and spring arrives along with all of the festivals. Over the summer, we will highlight a few of the best festivals around so stay tuned for our insight into the fests you need to keep on your calendar as we talk with the folks that bring them all to you!

First up is the Naptown BarBAYq which is happening this Saturday, May 6th at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds. The BarBAYq is put together by ABC Events who are also the force behind the Maryland Chicken Wing Festival (and yes we talk abou that), the Bay Bridge Paddle, and the Maryland Seafood Festival! Listen to Brendan Curley as he talks about their mission and how they are changing things up all the time to keep it fresh.

In the middle, we speak with Kevin Chaney who is the Emcee for the Annapolis Irish Festival which rolls into town on June 2nd and 3rd this year. We talk about the origins of the festival and how it has grown over the years since Eddie McGowan founded it in 2011. What is new for this year (spoiler…Guinness) and how they have contributed and given back to the community.

Finally, Brendan Curley joins us again to talk about the Maryland Seafood Festival. This is happening on September 9th and 10th and is a very special one this year–the festival is 50 years old. We talk about the history from City Dock to Sandy Point. The famous crab soup cook off and much more!

Throughout the summer, we will also look at the upcoming Annapolis Arts Week and the Annapolis Arts & Wine Festival, Kegs & Corks Beer and Wine Festival, and the Nextival, so make sure you subscribe to us to get all the 411 sent right to your phone!

Congressman Anthony Brown: ACA, the EPA and The Bay, Military Spending, and Martin O’Malley (E-35)

A few weeks ago, Congressman Anthony Brown’s (D- 4th District, MD) office contacted us about having the Congressman on the podcast. Sure thing!  We sat down with Rep. Anthony Brown in his Largo office to discuss a whole bunch of things that were on the freshman Congressman’s mind.

We talked about the Affordable Care Act and what the future looks like under President Trump. We talked about the proposed funding cut to the EPA and in particular the Chesapeake Bay. We talked military spending and how it should not be at the expense of domestic spending. We talked about Martin O’Malley, whom the Congressman said was “the best environmental Governor in the history of Maryland” and the chances for an O’Malley presidential run in 2020. Finally, we let Rep. Brown get a word in edgewise and talk about his focus during his term in office–workforce creation.

Talk to the Congressman:

A special thanks to our sponsors this week including…Homestead Gardens  AAMC, and Zachary’s Jewelers

Thanks to Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker for the intro
