What the Hell is Juuling and Why Should We Care? (E-96)

Kids will be kids, teens will be teens, and water will find its own level. For millennia, kids have experimented and tested limits, while exasperated parents have been just a step or two behind, trying to save them from themselves. The latest battle? Vaping and, more specifically, Juuling.

Cigarettes are passé. They are expensive, smelly, and easily detected by parents and teachers. Juuling is the sneakier and more insidious alternative. Is it more dangerous than smoking, though? The Crabs sit down with Dr. Stephen M. Cattaneo, MD, who is the Medical Director of Thoracic Oncology and the Division Director of Surgical Oncology at Anne Arundel Medical Center who breaks it all down for us.

Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts: An Exciting Future in the Making (E-95)

In 1978, people wondered what to do with the old Annapolis High School.  Over the next 40 years, that historic building became a hub for the arts scene in Anne Arundel County. With the vision and leadership of Linnell Bowen, operas, ballets, and symphonies were attracted to Annapolis.  After a giant renovation, Bowen passed the torch to Margaret Davis late last year in a most exciting time.

Davis is charged with continuing a legacy and leading Maryland Hall into the future. She has ideas, she has hit the ground running (she also is taking adult ballet at Maryland Hall but did not seem keen to talk too much about that), and the future is so exciting.

Listen in as we talk about the past, the present and the future of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

And, if you have not visited Maryland Hall recently…make some time this weekend to head over and take a peek at the galleries, the classrooms, the outdoor murals and art, the expansion, the renovation of the main theater, and the construction of the Bowen Theater on the lower level. Grab a snack at the cafe operated by students from AACPS’s CAT-South Culinary program.  There’s so much more than the regal facade of our old high school.

John Leopold…Former County Executive…Current Candidate…No Holds Barred (E-94)

Former Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold resigned his office after being convicted of misconduct in office after a torrid trial replete with accusations of infidelity and sexual trysts in parking lots.

In his first interview since leaving office, Leopold opens up and lays it all out. His history, his accomplishments, his mistakes, and his future.

We talk about his time in office and how he hopes to regain the voter’s trust as a Delegate in District 31-B.  And of course we talk about the trial and his conviction. We discuss the testimony, his medical records, and how his very own lawyer (who was also the General Counsel for the Maryland Democratic Party) threw him under the bus.

During this hour, he is contrite (and it seems very honest), and has a genuine desire to serve as an elected representative again. No easy task for politician convicted of misconduct.

After hearing this, I think many will consider pressing the re-set button on John Leopold and taking another look at him in a light that is significantly different than what you may have known before.

Here is a link to a PDF of the documents discussed in this episode!

Learn more about John Leopold here.

Depression and suicide. And a Severna Park fundraiser to talk about it (E-92)

Suicide. Depression. Shhhh. We don’t talk about that!  Let’s just keep that between us.  Nope!

This week we speak with Ethan and Ann Brennan who both suffered from depression (and in Ethan’s case an attempted suicide) and how they are working to make sure that no one has to go through what they did.

Last year they put on an event called Burgers and Bands which raised a lot of awareness and money in the Severna Park area. This year it is bigger and better. The event is on June 3rd at the Severna Park Taphouse and will feature live music all day including The Kelly Bell Band, Jimi Davies from Jimi’s Chicken Shack, performances from the Priddy Music Academy and more. But most importantly, there will be resources available for those who suffer and for everyone so they can recognize the signs and offer a hand of support.

As Ethan said, depression is a seven foot fat bully that you cannot see around. But if you look around that bully, you will see that there is a helping hand on the the other side.

Be sure to stop at the Severna Park Taphouse on Sunday the 3rd if only for an hour! It will be well worth your time!
