ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL

We headed to Maryland Hall to see Before the West Coast this afternoon and a single word—WOW!

I am not too much younger than the Writer/Producer Oyd Craddock (I ran into him in the hallway prior) but the level of racism in the early 70s in New Orleans blew my mind.

You can read the synopsis in your AFF Program, but if you have 66 minutes, please check this out. I am not sure why it is not included with the African American Experience Showcase, because it should be.

The next screening with a Q&A with Oyd Craddock is at 3:00pm tomorrow (Saturday, April 1, 2017) at the Asbury United Methodist Church on West Street!

ANNAPOLIS FILM FESTIVAL

This Crabcake is all about opening night. Th newest effort by Rob Reiner, LBJ was screened at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts in Annapolis Maryland and Reiner was in attendance along with Jeffrey Donovan who played JFK.

We hear the post screening with the film’s creators moderated by WOR Film Critic Joe Neumaier. Included in the panel were Reiner along with producers Trevor and Tim White and Matthew George; and writer Joey Hartstone. Of course, Reiner has some comments on the current situation in Washington DC.

After the screening, things heated up at the Boys & Girls Club of Annapolis which is the old Wiley Bates High School. During segregation, Annapolis had a white high school (Maryland Hall) and a black one (Boys & Girls Club) and the the locations were selected as a nod to LBJ and the passage of the Civil Rights Act which was a milestone of his administration.

LBJ stars Woody Harrelson, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jeffrey Donovan, and Richard Jenkins.

A Marine sergeant returns home after completing her third tour in Afghanistan. Unable to sleep, wracked by paranoia and anxiety, she carries unseen wounds. It is only a matter of time before she can no longer bottle up her trauma, and a boisterous welcome home party provokes her into an explosive outburst. Her husband is at a loss, and the VA seems to be an impossible option. When she has nowhere to turn, she runs deep into the woods.

In this Crabcake, we spoke with producer/director writer Remy Auberjonois and producer/writer/actor Kate Nowlin. We talk about why this story is different than all the others (spoiler because it is the first time involving women returning from combat), why the lead character is only referred to as “Our Sergeant,” and what it took to bring it to life along with how they both hope it resonates with the audiences!

The Other Kids is a bold hybrid of fiction and non-fiction in which real teens collaborated with the filmmaker to tell their own gripping, personal stories. Real kids are telling their real stories and they are woven into a riveting 94 minutes.

In this Crabcake, we spoke with producer Chris Brown on a really crappy connection that I did not realize until after we were done–sorry. The story of this film’s concept is unique in that it is the story of real-life teens acted by the very same real-life teens. Angst, anger, resentment, stress, it all comes out in a story that will span all ages–despite being written by teens.
