Not Guilty (E-127)

We can all agree that getting arrested and charged with attempted murder is a bummer. I think we can also agree that being found not guilty is a good thing when you are innocent. But now what?

In the world of Google, innocence means nothing. Google never forgets.

Today, we speak with an Annapolis native* that is living that nightmare. Spent time working with youth in public housing. Attended St. Mary’s High School. Was a nationally ranked football player. Arrested, charged, and found not guilty. And now, because of Google, he made a conscious decision to NOT name his first born son after himself.

* We are purposely NOT publishing his name to prevent further Google hits!

ELI5–Just what does Wes Adams do as a State’s Attorney? (E-113)

Yes we know there is an election year going on. Yes we know that Wes Adams and Anne Colt Leitess are both vying for the office. But we were curious–just what does a State’s Attorney do?

It’s a race that many may not completely understand and in that vein, we decided to ask Adams exactly what it is that his office does. The only ground rule we had was no politicking!  Taking a cue from Reddit, we had him explain like I was five (ELI5)..which is not too far of a stretch!

Anyhow, sit back and have a listen and learn a bunch, just as we did.

What’s Happening with Crime in Baltimore, a Chat with Police Commissioner Kevin Davis (E-64)

Baltimore crime is on the increase and so are the pressures of police Commissioner Kevin Davis. In the wake of the Baltimore City riots of 2015 and the death of Freddie Gray, getting a handle on crime is no easy task. Commissioner Davis came into Anne Arundel County to clean up after former County Executive John Leopold was forced to resign; and now he is trying to work his magic in Baltimore. Listen in as we speak with The Commish from his office on the top-floor of Baltimore City Police Headquarters.

And if you get a chance, check out the fascinating Baltimore City Police Museum. We did. It’s VERY cool. Just opened. But, limited hours!

Today’s nourishment… R House. A food incubator/markethouse/something else that is hard to describe in the Remington neighborhood. Free and easy parking. Incredible food. Great vibe. Check it out.  Hey Annapolis–you can learn a thing or two!

A thank you to Chief TJ Smith for making this all happen!

Coming up….former County Executive John R. Leopold, Baltimore County Executive and Gubernatorial Candidate Kevin Kamenetz,  Maryland State Delegate Nic Kipke (if he will ever return my email), Heather Mizeur, Delegate Herb McMillan, the new Mayor of Annapolis, and a few more surprises!

A New Sheriff in Town. A Conversation With New Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker (E-48)

Newly minted Annapolis Police Chief Scott Baker sat down with us to talk about the future direction of the department. After a nationwide search, the Mayor decided the best choice was a cop right in the department (he was the #2 under former Chief Pristoop) and one that had the respect of the rank and file officers.

We discussed his vision and the differences between him and the older regime, the 30 plus outreach programs the Annapolis Police Department currently has, the relationship between the department and the council/mayor and the major issues facing him as Chief–opioids, gangs, and establishing a trust with the citizens of Annapolis.

What we did NOT talk about (because this news broke the day after we recorded) was the recent allegations surrounding a lawsuit that is to be filed alleging that an officer (who has since resigned) stole $1500 from a citizen during an incident. Nor did we discuss the latest incident involving “inappropriate contact” between an officer and a citizen involved in an incident.

Coming up….a talk with the organizers behind the Travis Manion Foundation 911 Heroes Run, former County Executive John R. Leopold, the Chairman of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, and crabcakes with the Aldermanic candidates for the City of Annapolis.

Looking ahead–A series of Crabcakes with the candidates for Alderperson for the City of Annapolis, a conversation with the Travis Manion Foundation, Congressman John Sarbanes, an exclusive talk with Annapolis’ new police chief–Chief Scott Baker! And more!

Crime, Heroin, and Justice in Maryland? State’s Attorney Wes Adams Weighs In (E-20)

This week, The Maryland Crabs visit the courthouse to speak with State’s Attorney (for Anne Arundel County), Wes Adams. We remain un-indicted.

In this episode, we delve into the heroin problem that is impacting the state and what is being done to combat it. We talk a bit about the judicial system and how Anne Arundel is getting tougher on crime. Find out about Adams’ personal “YESS!” moment and the one that got away.

For a fantastic insight into crime, heroin, and justice in Maryland, this is a not-to-miss episode of The Maryland Crabs.

Thank you to everyone who wrote with suggestions for upcoming episodes. We are on it.  Coming up in the next few weeks will be the founders of The Annapolis Film Festival, Mayor Pantelides–both the candidate and the Mayor, Brooklyn Park’s very own Britney Girl Dale, and a surprise candidate for Mayor of Annapolis that will shake the race to its core. You will hear it here first!

Big geeky news…. we are now on iHeartRADIO!  So if you listen to iHeartRADIO, you can listen, rate, share, subscribe, favorite right there.  Their app and website search is a bit wonky at the moment but they promised us they’d fix it soon.  But here’s the direct link!

But if you are just joining us…. make sure you check out some (or all) of our previous episodes? You really should. They could change your life. Granted, your life would have to be pretty bad. But still, we have some gems you will want to check out!  Most recently….

  • Last week, we spoke with Marc Rodriguez. You may not know who he is right now, but you will. A sharp guy who has been working with Alderman Littmann and is poised to make a run for office in the upcoming Annapolis elections.
  • We recap 2016. Our last episode of 2016 was a lot of fun and lacking any direction whatsoever. We talked about how we decided to do The Maryland Crabs, where we want to go in 2017 and beyond, some of our past guests, and how good the lunch really was at Sammy’s Italian Pizza Kitchen in Eastport!
  • Governor Larry Hogan invited us into his private office for Jaegerbombs and wings while we watched the Ravens.  OK, so maybe it was more of a conversation with the State Police watching over us making sure we did not swipe the guitar off his office wall…but we did have a great conversation.

Oh hell…just go back and listen to the ones you have not heard!  And PLEASE be sure to tell your friends about us!

Better yet, go to iTunes or Google Play or iHeartRADIO and subscribe to our podcast and have them automatically delivered to your phone every time there is a new episode.

Tim restrained himself this week—nothing was stolen from the Courthouse! However, he did pick up a few drinking tips for must-visit pubs the next time he is in Ireland! Who knew the Courthouse was such a wealth of information!
