CRABCAKE: Franchot: Taxes, Beer, the Annapolis Machine and a Run for Governor (March 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we sit down with Maryland’s Comptroller, Peter Franchot–who I might add is one of the most accessible elected officials– to talk about his roles, his failed Reform on Tap program, taxes, and his battle with the “Annapolis Machine” that is trying to strip him of some of his duties in a vendetta. And with Governor Hogan as a term-limited Governor, we find out if Peter Franchot might be next in line!

Jared Littmann – Minimum Wage, Maximum Pain? (E-130)

The cost of living in Maryland is staggering. But, when you live in a state that has the country’s best flag, what would you expect? So how do you level the playing field? Raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour might be a good start, right? Welp, it’s a little more complicated than that when you’re a small-business owner.

Jared Littmann, owner of K&B True Value and former alderman of Ward 5 in Annapolis, could be described as a Progressive Democrat. But he’s not a fan of HB 166, which would raise the minimum wage by almost 50%. He must have a pretty good reason for this, right? He does. Jared breaks down what this legislation would mean from the perspective of someone who owns a family-run business.

Thank you to Roxana and Raul Rodriguez for hosting us at Caliente Grill on Forest Drive in Annapolis!

The Boys from Red Maryland Come to Town (E-110)

It’s the clash of podcasts! What happens when you put the Righty Tighties of Red Maryland in the same room as the Lefty Loosies of The Maryland Crabs? The knives come out. Well, not exactly. It turns out that when you put four guys who all love the sound of their own voices together in the same room, they actually have a really good time. And you get a really long episode.

Brian Griffiths and Greg Kline of Red Maryland run a media empire consisting of an unapologetically right-leaning website, blog, and podcast in the bluest of blue states. They launched Maryland Podcast Month back in May to promote local podcasts and John and Tim wisely decided to ride their coattails, and a relationship grew from there. They are all now best friends and will most likely backpack across Europe together this summer. But we’ll probably drive. Which is faster and easier.

The Maryland Crabs 2016 Recap; and a Peek Into 2017 (E-18)

It’s been an exciting 18 weeks for The Maryland Crabs. In September we launched after years of hemming and hawing. And in that time, we opined, formed our conspiracy theories, chatted with police chiefs, legislators, and even the Governor.

We solved nothing. But hopefully, it made you think!

Next year, there is a LOT more on tap as we continue to grow and expand across Maryland. In the next few weeks, we will be speaking with Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams about our heroin epidemic and more. And, we have some surprise guests in store along with a significant expansion later in the year!

In this episode, we discuss and rehash all that. Where we succeeded, where we failed; and why John blew off the first live podcast at the Ebb Tide.

But we need your help!  Please let us know what is important to you.  Give us an email with your thoughts…tweet at us…Facebook us….if you see us driving on the road, swerve into us and we can talk while the police shut down the road.

And most importantly, THANK YOU!  We have seen our listener base grow incredibly over these few short weeks and now are reaching over 1000 people per episode the three weeks following release. We appreciate it and certainly encourage you to share the podcast with your friends and to subscribe on iTunes or Google Play and give us a rating!

Have you listened to all of our previous episodes? You really should. They could change your life. Granted, your life would have to be pretty bad. But still, we have some gems you will want to check out!  Most recently….

  • Governor Larry Hogan invited us into his private office for Jaegerbombs and wings while we watched the Ravens.  OK, so maybe it was more of a conversation with the State Police watching over us making sure we did not swipe the guitar off his office wall…but we did have a great conversation.
  • Speaker of the House of Delegates, Michael E. Busch sat down and discussed the upcoming session, legislating in a Trump presidency and what it means for Maryland,  and his recent criticism of Delegate Herb McMillan.
  • Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop lets us know what he is doing to combat the apparent crime wave in Annapolis. No one is more upset than he is!

Oh hell…just go back and listen to the ones you have not heard!  And PLEASE be sure to tell your friends about us!

Better yet, go to iTunes or Google Play and subscribe to our podcast and have them automatically delivered to your phone every time there is a new episode.

And coming up next week….we will figure it out between now and then so stay tuned and have a Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah!

MD Governor Larry Hogan: Road Kill, Sick Leave and Just How He Manages the Job (E-17)

Larry Hogan is Maryland’s 62nd Governor with some “through the roof” approval ratings. He figured we could not do too much damage and agreed to sit down and crab with us a for a bit.

We discussed his 2017 plans–BOOST, paid sick leave and the Road Kill Bill. We talked about President-Elect Trump, and what is on his Netflix queue. Spoiler: he has YET to see House of Cards.
All in all, this is an insightful look into the Governor who took the electorate and the legislature by surprise by defeating sitting Lt. Governor Anthony Brown!
