CRABCAKE: Rick Wakeman and the Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour (September 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or longer in this case, because..well…beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

He’s a keyboard legend and he picked Maryland Hall to start his North American Grumpy Old Rock Star Tour!  Rick Wakeman, keyboardist for Yes, author, writer, and yes–comedian chats with me before he hops on a plane over the pond.

The show is Saturday, September 21st at Maryland Hall at 8pm.

What to expect?  Something completely different and beautiful musically; mixed in with some irreverence and talk about the humor in his life. Today we learn that he will probably have a new couch when he returns and what makes him the Grumpy Old Rock Star!

And disappointingly, I suggested he do an intimate performance in my living room–and he politely declined!

Paul Reed Smith got his start upstairs over what is now the Rams Head Tavern. Today, he runs a global guitar company sought out by artists such as Santana, John Mayer, Peter Frampton and more.

John sat down with Paul (prior to an awesome tour which is highly recommended) to talk about PRS history, future, and all sorts of stuff including his Master Course that will be taught at Maryland Hall this summer!

5 Minutes…20 Slides… Do You Have What It Takes For Ignite Annapolis 4? (E-122)

Ignite Annapolis is here. Well, not quite yet, but it is coming up on Thursday, March 14th. Go mark your calendars now!

Ignite is a community building program that puts 16 people on the hot spot for 5 minutes. They develop a topic for which they have some passion–from silly to mundane to highly technical to comedic to … well you get the picture. Virtually anything. They develop 20 slides to illustrate their topic. And then Ignite gives them 5 minutes to explain it all and the slides are pre timed. The event will leave you scratching your head. Crying. Laughing. Thinking. But most importantly, it will leave you talking. Talking with your neighbors and some of the 600 people that shared the experience.

This week, we sat down with Liz Thibodeau and Kathleen Booth who are two of the organizers for Ignite 4. We talk about the concept, its growth, the way it builds community and how to become involved as an attendee, speaker, or sponsor!

If you need a break (and don’t we all), this is a perfect way to press a reset button on the winter-doldrums.  Have a listen!

Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts: An Exciting Future in the Making (E-95)

In 1978, people wondered what to do with the old Annapolis High School.  Over the next 40 years, that historic building became a hub for the arts scene in Anne Arundel County. With the vision and leadership of Linnell Bowen, operas, ballets, and symphonies were attracted to Annapolis.  After a giant renovation, Bowen passed the torch to Margaret Davis late last year in a most exciting time.

Davis is charged with continuing a legacy and leading Maryland Hall into the future. She has ideas, she has hit the ground running (she also is taking adult ballet at Maryland Hall but did not seem keen to talk too much about that), and the future is so exciting.

Listen in as we talk about the past, the present and the future of Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts.

And, if you have not visited Maryland Hall recently…make some time this weekend to head over and take a peek at the galleries, the classrooms, the outdoor murals and art, the expansion, the renovation of the main theater, and the construction of the Bowen Theater on the lower level. Grab a snack at the cafe operated by students from AACPS’s CAT-South Culinary program.  There’s so much more than the regal facade of our old high school.
