An Insider’s Conversation with The Capital’s Chase Cook (E-27)

This week on The Maryland Crabs we sit down with Chase Cook, the Annapolis reporter for The Capital.  Chase has his finger on the pulse of Annapolis government and he peels back the layers for us this week.

We talk about the recent firing of Police Chief Michael Pristoop (Mayor Pantelides spoke with us about that too) and crime in general. We jumped into the mess that is the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis (HACA). And finally we dug into the recently passed ordinance from Alderman Jared Littmann seeking additional protections to local immigrants. Does this make Annapolis a “sanctuary city?” We talk about it!

To dig even deeper, you can check out some of Chase’s recent work for The Capital on these topics:

Finally, if you want to follow him on Twitter–and you should….  @ChaseACook

APD’s Chief Pristoop – On the Other Side of the Interrogation Table (E-15)

mdcrabs_250x250Crime is at an all-time high in Annapolis…or is it? Perception and statistics rarely align and Chief Pristoop joins the Crabs to muddle through both. From cameras to staffing and patrols to public housing, and how he’s going to spend the $1.25 million Christmas gift promised to him by the mayor, no subject is off-limits. And will they ever find John’s bike? Will John ever stop complaining about it?

What’s the REAL Deal with Public Housing in Annapolis?

mdcrabs_250x250Public Housing has been in the news this year. Crime is up. Drug dealing is up. HACA, the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis has been under fire. Mayor Pantelides is the first Mayor in recent history to reach out and try to correct the course.

This week, we sit down and talk with Sandra Chapman who is a public housing resident and also chair of the HACA Board, and Chip Doordan, the former CEO of Anne Arundel Medical System who also serves on the board.

HACA has problems. They admit that they will not be solved overnight. But they have a plan and we crab about it. In the end, we did not solve the woes, but we see the vision and will revisit it again in six months to see how it is all working out!

THIS is a good one!

The Maryland Crabs: Incompetence, Annoyance, and Overreach (E-6)

mdcrabs_250x250In this episode , John and Tim crab about Annapolis bureaucracy and power plays.

It looks like HACA has mismanaged a huge sum of money. Again. Is it incompetence or malfeasance? Is someone going to actually call them out on it?

No one likes paying for parking, which is why Tim moves his car five times a day. How is SP+ doing as the new kid on the (parking-restricted) block?

Downtown Annapolis is beautiful, to be sure. But are the folks who are in charge of keeping it that way overstepping their authority? The Historic Preservation Commission goes head-to-head with downtown restauranteur and mayoral candidate, Gavin Buckley.
