CRABCAKE: Spiked Seltzer and a taste of a new Fall beer! (August 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs! What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20….or longer in this case, because..well…beer! In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we continue our monthly series (no set schedule other than monthly) about beer.  We have a huge distributer of beer right here in Annapolis–Katcef Brothers Inc. and they have a ton of experts on hand to de-mystify beer for us.  Now, full disclosure–I like beer! I like beer a lot!  But, I am not a beer snob and a Bud Light will suit me just fine.

Summer is waning! But we’re not letting go just yet!  This month we talk about a flavorless spiked seltzer (let that sink in for a minute)– Bon & Viv Spiked Seltzer Classic. And it truly is flavorless! We talk about our favorite summer brews (Devil’s Backbone and Troegs) and wrap it up with just a taste of fall with a brand new cider from Bold Rock–their seasonal Harvest Haze! Mixed in we scratch our heads on the success of Naturdays and the new Natural Light spiked seltzer! And Bill spills the beans on Capit-Ale–a new collaboration with Devil’s Backbone and the Washington Capitals!

Solvent…an Annapolis FinTech Startup (E-143)

The cannabis wave is sweeping the country with medical marijuana being legalized state by state, seemingly by the day. Can recreational weed be next? But here’s the catch-22…although growers, processors, and distributors are making money hand over fist, banking that money is extraordinarily difficult due to onerous and vague federal regulations. That’s where Solvent comes in.

John and Tim sit down with Brian Meyer and Tony Richards, two of the five cofounders of this Annapolis financial tech startup that is determined to simplify and revolutionize the banking aspect of the cannabis industry using proprietary tools and processes. We did not get high. Unfortunately.

CRABCAKE: Beth Nielsen Chapman (August 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs!  What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20. In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, Beth Nielsen Chapman joins John on the phone to talk about her upcoming show at the Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis along with what it is like being a Nashville Hall of Fame Songwriter, working with some of the biggest names in music and why she likes the train!

We also hit on some personal stuff…the death of her husband from cancer in 1994 and her own battle with breast cancer in 2000. But as she pulls into the train station (didn’t want to make her miss her stop) we get some tips on being a grandmom, and her favorite Elton John song–besides the one she wrote for him!

Catch Beth’s show on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at Rams Head On Stage. Show is at 8pm, doors open at 7pm!

Here are some links to the things we talked about!

Wow, has it really been 8 years for Kegs & Corks??? (E-142)

Discovering a good recipe for a festival is tough. How many festivals are one and done? How many lose their mojo after a year or two? Well, Kegs & Corks Craft Beer and Maryland Wine Festival seems to have found the answer as they are preparing to bring the 8th Annual Kegs and Corks Festival to the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds on August 17, 2019.

This week, we sit down with Ashlee and Sharon to see how they do it. The answer is simple–keep it fresh. And fresh this year is The Amish Outlaws! They will be headlining and we speak with Ezekiel at the 23:30 mark.

So, if you are a beer or wine or music fan–this is the festival for you. Listen up as we talk music, vendors, and of course the beer and wine that will be coming on August 17th!

CRABCAKE: Jeff Gunhus, Local Author (July 2019)

This is a Crabcake from The Maryland Crabs!  What is a Crabcake? Well, it’s a very short snippet of something you need to know. It might be 5 minutes long..or it might be 20.  In any event, enjoy your Maryland Crabcake!

Today, we ventured to Killarney House to speak with Jeff Gunhus, who is a local author of more than a dozen books ranging from children’s books (to jump start his son’s interest in reading) to horror to thriller including one that is set here in Annapolis (Killer Within).

Jeff has published most of his books through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing which is a new technology that is upending the traditional publishing business. We talk about what it takes to write a book, and how easy it now has become to get published.

Up next for Jeff–another thriller set in DC.
